What Grade Do I Give?

Five yes-or-no questions for anything that doesn’t come with a test score. Stop at the first no. That’s the grade, and you can explain why.

Why we made this

We’re homeschool parents too. Grading was the part we kept putting off.

At GCE, students meet a mentor for four live hours a week and do the rest on their own schedule. Short, focused school days. Afternoons free for the farm, the family business, soccer practice, life. We call it 4 Hours to Freedom.

But at the end of the quarter the grading still lands on mom. So we built the thing we kept wishing we had: one calm place to turn a year of real work into a report card or transcript you’re proud to hand over.

Read it. Tried it. Got the idea. Finished it. Can explain it. Yes to all five is an A, and the first no tells you the grade. The five questions behind the grade helper, the same way our mentors think about discussion-based work.

Questions moms ask us

Will colleges accept a transcript I made myself?
Yes. In a homeschool, the parent is the school administrator, and a parent-issued transcript is the standard document colleges expect from homeschool applicants. Keep it to one page, include your grading scale, and sign and date it. Some colleges also ask for course descriptions or test scores, so check the homeschool admissions page of each school on your list.
What grade do I give for a class with no tests?
Use the five questions. They turn “they seemed to get it” into a grade you can defend: Did they read it? Did they try? Did they get the big idea? Did they finish? Can they explain it in their own words? Yes to all five is an A. The first no tells you the grade.
Do I have to give grades at all?
For younger kids, most families don’t need to, and plenty use E / S / N or a simple portfolio instead. Check your own state’s requirements. By high school you’ll want letter grades and credits on a transcript, so a simple report card habit a few years early makes senior year painless.
Where does my child’s information go?
Nowhere. Everything you type saves in your own browser on this device. Nothing is sent to GCE or anyone else. Use “Save a backup file” inside the tool to keep a copy somewhere safe or to move it to another computer.
Is this really free?
Really. No account, no trial, no catch. We made it for our own families first and figured every homeschool parent deserves the same help. If it saves you an evening, share it with a friend.

Know a mom who’s dreading report cards?

Send her this page. It’s the kind of thing we all wish someone had handed us in year one.
